The Art of the Pause
Maintaining momentum in the 9-5 parent world
You’re making friends.
You’re hopping on spaces.
You’re getting into weekly calls.
You’re helping others with their problems.
You’re ready to put together an offer and scale up on making a difference.
Then.
Life hits you.
The family needs dinner.
The house needs maintenance.
Unexpected delays.
Momentum flags.
What do you do when these things get “in the way”?
Nothing.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying to quit.
Yes, it’s really discouraging when things don’t go the way you want them to.
It can be a soul-crushing thing to come so far and feel like you’re tripping just before the finish line…or the starting line for that matter.
Life happens.
As a 9-5 parent who is working towards a better life for my family, I go through this on a regular basis.
You can’t push aside those close to you…the price isn’t worth losing them.
Don’t worry so much about “checking in” every day.
Your definition of this phrase is important.
Show up for yourself in any way you can.
Your momentum matters in context of your life.
You may have more time to devote to this pursuit than others.
You may go farther in a shorter amount of time.
What matters is that you stick to your guns, however way you can.
Don’t compare yourself to others. They are not you, and they do not have the same life situation.
However, it’s a good idea to know where your stopping point will be when you do have to pause.
It makes it much easier to pick up where you left off if you do.
For me, I do three things:
Keep track of the progress somewhere whether it be physical or digital
Note down the first action you can take to get back on track
Have a rough timeline to take the action
Your long-term commitment to the journey while living your life as you see fit is more important.
The Takeaway
So to recap…
take care of whatever your situation is in life
building a side hustle or a business of your own is important, but it’s not the highest priority
have a plan to get back when you are ready
It’s not “goodbye” to your pursuits…it’s "see you later”.
Your family and loved ones take priority over everything else.
Here’s this week’s actionable exercise:
When was a time where you had to hit pause on a hobby or a project because life had other plans for you?
Reflect on this and think about whether or not you are interested in picking it up again!
This is the second exercise in expanding the possibilities.
Thought of the week:
An Inspirator focuses on long-term results as opposed to short-term gains.
Something’s burning…I wonder if I left something on in the mines…
