The Reason We Keep Inventing More Stuff
And the powerful side effect that enables us to do what we do
Machines can do everything that we can do and do it better…
at least when it comes to execution and quality in terms of high tech devices.
There is no way in hell that you can make a smartphone with your bare hands. It’s just not gonna happen.
So how do we keep advancing towards that bright, glorious future outlined by the likes of Roddenberry, Lucas, and Asimov?
We do what Feynman posited in his article “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom”.
No, you don’t have to read the article yourself, but I figured I could at least put it up for future reference.
Anyway, we can do crazy stuff like this because we’ve extended our control to ever-smaller dimensions by building ever-smaller machines to do the manual labor for us based on the rules of physics that definitely aren’t what you expect…
Marvel envisioned it over the past decade starting with “Antman”, and it barely scratches the surface of the craziness at the quantum level.
But enough of all that. The point of the intro was to highlight that 1) I’m a huge nerd, and 2) that we need technology to do things we can’t possibly do for ourselves.
Everything else, though, is fair game.
Writing and artistic expression are untouchable.
Here’s why.
Perspective is everything
No matter what you think of the coming tsunami of content generation that is already flooding the internet, there’s something that bears repeating.
Every single advancement in our lives has been met with skepticism, fear, and even dismissed as a fad.
The loom, the Guttenberg press, the cotton gin, the assembly line, the computer, the internet, the gaming industry, these are just some examples that revolutionized our society.
But to what end?
Each and every single one of these things raised our standard of living and, when used properly, opened up our schedules to pursue activities ever-closer to exploring the point of it all and to connect with others at scale.
Think about it.
Each advancement by itself is nice and all, but put together in context of our civilization, they create lifestyles of infinite potential provide we don’t abuse the privilege.
It’s human nature to do that as well.
What we do as writers and creators is combat that very tendency, and there’s absolutely nothing that says we can’t use AI to help us do so.
And that…that fight…is what drives the purpose of self expression for so many.
That’s what makes your content bulletproof, the fact that you can use speak up and share what you believe and value and love with the entire love at an instant’s notice.
When you choose to create, you eventually discover that we have a lot more in common than we realize.
Sadly, we’re in a period of time where we are more divided than ever across the world, and we’re using the very technology that is meant to bring us closer together with our loved ones to also attack those that don’t look, live, or love like we do.
Don’t make this mistake
People seem to think that art in any form is less important than science.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
A well-rounded education with an interest and mastery in at least one discipline from each “category” is a powerful combination.
Being bulletproof against AI-generated slop means cultivating a prismatic approach to life.
You can’t refract what you absorb if you aren’t the kind of person who can see things from different angles.
True thinkers and scientists don’t hate artists, and true artists understand the need to embrace technologies to help them express themselves further.
The internet enables us to stand right at the boundary of the finite and the infinite, both within ourselves and with the collective consciousness of the world.
It’s the closest to tapping into your latent superpowers that you can get these days.
You may not ever pursue creating a digital footprint the way I am, but understanding it is essential to protect yourself in the long run.
Prismatic thinking is one of these approaches.
From where I stand, it’s a simple notion that’s taken me a lifetime to realize.
It’s been tough to articulate, but the effort has been worth it.
It’s enabled me to have limitless content to write about by understanding what I’m about and what drives me forward.
If you’re stuck, then I hope what I share here can help you unlock your hidden potential.
P. S.
I’ll start sharing my ideas about cultivating a prismatic approach to life from the ground up over the next few months. Since you’ve subscribed to this experiment, you’re the first to see how this evolves.
And if that’s not what you signed up for, feel free to unsubscribe. Who knows? Maybe I’ll have something worth coming back to someday when it’s more fleshed out!
To those of you who have stuck around since I started this crazy newsletter over 100 issues ago, thank you for allowing me to drop by over the past few years!
